Mathilde Mertens has been practicing family law and youth law since 2018.
She assists her clients in various matters: marriage, divorce, child custody, parental authority, filiation, and family patrimonial law (matrimonial regimes, exit from indivision between partners, etc.).
She also supports litigants in the civil and family aspects of their criminal issues (international child abduction, family abandonment, intrafamily violence). To do so, Mathilde Mertens completed the “Lawyers Victim Assistance” training in 2025.
Convinced of the need for de-escalation in family disputes, she prioritizes alternative dispute resolution methods and has been trained in collaborative law since 2020.
Me Mertens is a member of the youth section of the Brussels Bar and is specifically qualified to defend minors in danger and/or delinquents.
She graduated with distinction from a master’s degree in law (civil and criminal focus) at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2018, first joined the KHK association, then the Perspectives – Law & Mediation firm in 2020, and became a partner at the Akalex law firm in 2025.
Scientifically, Mathilde Mertens served as a family law assistant at the University of Mons.
With extensive experience in the associative sector, she has been actively involved in the Brussels Bar, serving as Treasurer (2022-2024) and then Director (2026-2027) of the Brussels Young Bar Association.
